Hangar2 represents a commitment to the health of future generations.

The vision for Hangar2 is the result of a team of people who came together because they share a common sense of urgency to address the crises facing our youth.

The data paints an alarming picture: the mental and physical health of so many of our kids is on the decline.

Some feel burned out by societal pressures to continually over-achieve; others are victims of the unshakeable inequity and the growing racial and economic chasm that divides us.  All are impacted by the unimaginable events of the past two years and the compounding impact of a global pandemic coupled with multiple acts of social injustice.

PLAY WITH PURPOSE

Hangar2 represents six years of action.

The concept is based on the evidence that a child’s consistent participation in sustainable extra-curricular activities leads to essential, positive outcomes and the development of invaluable life skills.

With a growing deficiency of welcoming, inclusive, safe, year-round facilities available for youth activities, Hangar2 offers an innovative response that delivers on our core premise: every child deserves to play more, have more fun, and enjoy access to positive mentorship.

The plan for Hangar2 calls for the restoration and conversion of an extraordinary former aircraft hangar into a one-of-a-kind, 140,000-square-foot indoor neighborhood of fun activities for kids.

The building now sits empty. But our approved plan calls for equipping the facility with a multi-purpose turf surface for lacrosse and other field sports; hard court space for basketball and additional court sports; archery ranges; technology, arts and makers studios; plus multiple flex spaces. It will provide kids of all socio-economic backgrounds with access to unlimited activities, learning opportunities and social interaction.

Located in Magnuson Park, the aircraft hangar, Building 2, is a historic landmark, now sitting empty among a collection of buildings and structures constructed during WWII to support the overall function of the original Sand Point Naval Air Station. A large portion of the area has been retrofitted to provide affordable housing to a growing community of families with children who will enjoy free access to Hangar2.

Opening Hangar2’s massive sliding doors will connect the inside action to the beautiful surrounding lakeside park of playfields and natural environment.

Projections show that Hangar 2 will engage over 40,000 children in the Seattle area over the course of the year. But the potential of Hangar 2 is to serve as a pilot project and testing ground for the development of similar projects in other communities.
